Kudzu is a plant that some folks are afraid of. The climbing vines can grow a foot a day, happily engulfing large trees, cars, and even homes. But for all its fearsome reputation, kudzu has one extremely pretty delightful feature:

Beekeepers in the American South have been stumped on a few rare occasions when they open their frames to find PURPLE honey with a sweet, “oddly delicious” taste that some have compared to Koolaid, and the purple honey mystery has been traced back to kudzu. Hidden beneath thick layers of green leaves, kudzu sprouts deep purple flowers that don’t show much, but apparently the bees can find them.

The fear that kudzu would take over the whole country has been hushed by botanists who say its spread is actually dwindling. And while I’m happy for Southerners who worry that their things could be overrun while they sleep, I am sad to think that I will probably never get a taste of purple kudzu honey.
